How to Make Dandelion Salve with Tallow (Yes, the “Weeds”)

How to Make Dandelion Salve with Tallow (Yes, the “Weeds”)

Let’s get one thing straight: dandelions are not weeds. They are tiny, sun-shaped revolutionaries that break through concrete and refuse to die. Honestly, goals.

And today? You’re going to turn them into a luxurious, skin-loving salve… using tallow. Yes. Rendered animal fat. Stay with me. Your great-great-grandmother is nodding approvingly from somewhere.

Step 1: Time Travel (a.k.a. Make Your Infused Oil a Week Early)

If you try to rush this step, the dandelions will know. They will come for you while you sleep.

You must make your dandelion-infused oil at least one week before making the salve. Two weeks if you live on the edge.

What You’ll Need:

  • A lot of dandelion flowers, just grab a couple handfuls that's probably enough.
  • A carrier oil (olive oil, almond oil, whatever whispers “rustic apothecary” to you)
  • A clean glass jar

Instructions:

  1. Go outside and harvest dandelions like a forest fairy. Choose bright, fully open flowers.
  2. Lay them out to wilt for 24–48 hours. This prevents your oil from turning into a science experiment.
  3. Put the flowers in your jar. Don’t pack them like sardines—they will know. keep them loose.
  4. Pour oil over them until they’re fully submerged.
  5. Seal the jar and place it somewhere dark and cool.
  6. Wait. Yes, actually wait. At least one week.
(Use this time to stir the jar occasionally and assert dominance over the dandelions.)
  7. Strain out the flowers

You now have dandelion-infused oil and crunchy granola energy.

Step 2: Assemble Your Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dandelion-infused oil
  • 2 tablespoons beeswax
  • 2 tablespoons beef tallow
  • Optional: essential oils (measure with your heart)

Step 3: Melt, Stir, Make.

  1. Set up a double boiler (or do the jar-in-a-pot-of-water trick like a resourceful woodland alchemist).
  2. Add your infused oil, beeswax, and tallow.
  3. Heat gently until everything melts together into a golden, slightly suspicious-looking liquid.
  4. Stir it like you’re brewing something important. Because you are.
  5. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  6. Add essential oils.
  7. Pour into tins or jars before it solidifies.
  8. Let it cool completely. (sticking it in the fridge may lead to cracking so try leaving it on the counter)

Congratulations. You made salve. From weeds. And fat. The government cannot stop you.

How to Use It

Use your dandelion salve on:

  • Dry, cracked skin
  • Hands that have seen things
  • Achy muscles
  • Elbows that could sand wood

It’s rich, it’s soothing, and it will make you feel like you churn butter recreationally.

Why Tallow? (Trust the Ancestors)

Tallow is basically skincare’s ancient cheat code. It’s packed with nutrients and ridiculously compatible with human skin. It absorbs beautifully.

Storage Notes

  • Keep it in a cool, dry place
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Use within 6–12 months
  • Try not to show it to people who aren’t ready to hear you say “I made this from dandelions and beef fat”

You went outside, picked “weeds,” waited an entire week like a patient little herbal gremlin.

Go forth and moisturize.
